Light a Candle is an online memorial service, allowing visitors to commemorate the life of a loved one, a hero or a momentous event. It is fully eCommerce enabled, allowing visitors to make payments for services online, and for their memorials to become live upon completion of their transaction.
The brief outlined a number of important requirements. While the focus was to drive sales through the site, Light a Candle could not be seen to be overtly commercial. The look and feel of the site should be serene and respectful - complementing the content. Another requirement was that the site could be run with as little human intervention as possible.
Babylon fulfilled these two core requirements in its final implementation. Firstly, the look and feel of the site is tranquil, with appropriate content and colour schemes.
Minimum Maintenance
Secondly, the site runs with little maintenance. Home page content changes automatically on a weekly basis. The content is entered through an administration panel whenever convenient for the site administrator. Memorials can be purchased and taken through the complete transaction cycle without any assistance from the Light a Candle staff. The staff then have the time to answer inquiries and deal with problems from customers if they arise.
The main content of the site - the home page, the memorials, the visitors' candles - is provided by a database back end. The administrator panel allows content and configuration options to be set in the database; this allows Light a Candle to make significant changes to the site quickly and efficiently. Scheduled tasks deal with much of the daily administration, such as sending out various email notifications to subscribers and scanning visitor contributions for inappropriate content.
